Update: RIM Introduces Two New Voice-Enabled Blackberry Devices

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - October 16, 2002

Rim has just unveiled two new Blackberry wireless handhelds with integrated voice. The two new handhelds, the Blackberry 6710 and 6720, operate on GSM/GRPS networks and allow for mobile business travelers to have continuous access when travelling abroad.

The Blackberry 6710 operates on 900/1900 MHz GSM/GRPS networks allowing operation in North America, Europe, and Asia. The Blackberry 6720 operates on 900/1800 MHz GSM GRPS networks giving mobile business travellers freedom to move across Europe and Asia.

Both of the units share the same design. They measure a sleek 4.76 x 2.99 x 0.70 inches and weigh a mere 4.86 oz. Power for the device comes from a removable, rechargeable lithium battery. Voice functions are possible through either the built-in speaker/microphone or a headset jack which allows for handsfree use. These devices also feature backlit keypads and screen which allows for easy use in poorly lit areas.

Both of these devices support J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition) which gives access to the more than 3 million Java developers. Blackberry recently introduced a BlackBerry Development Environment for J2ME which enhanced java development for the Blackberry.

Pricing and availability will vary by carrier and country. Check with your local wireless carriers to determine availability in your area.

Update: Rogers AT&T Wireless in Canada has announced that the Blackberry 6710 has been made available to consumers. The price for the device is $749.00.
