Good Technology has filed a lawsuit against Research In Motion, seeking protection against patent infringement claims. Good Technology is asking the court to either declare that RIM's patent on what is called "single unified e-mail" is invalid, or to declare that Good is not violating RIM's patent.
The Wall Street Journal originally reported the lawsuit and it looks like this lawsuit is a pre-emptive move by Good Technology to ward off any future lawsuits against them by Research In Motion.
Since Research In Motion launched their Blackberry line of handheld devices several other companies have attempted to join the ranks of always on email devices. In fact, last year RIm challenged Glenayre Technologies in a patent dispute but the case was settled. Glenayre agreed that RIM's patents were valid.
