AOL Picks up Sidekick, Dumps RIM

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - June 16, 2003

American Online has said it plans to drop it's ties to RIM and drop support for its AOL Mobile Communicator in August. The Mobile Communicator pager, which was developed by Research In Motion, allows owners of the device and subscribers to AOL's Internet service to access AOL instant messaging and e-mail using the gadget.

AOL will instead stear users to the T-mobile Sidekick. In fact, AOL is offering a $100 rebate on the newly announced color sidekick.

T-Mobile has a Data-Only plan for $30 with an additional 20 cents per minute for voice capabilities for those who need mostly data connectivity. You can also sign up for any T-Mobile voice plan and get unlimited data for an additional $20 a month.

These days most mobile phones can access AOL through a wap browser or AIM client.
