RIM's stock has been falling all year because of the patent lawsuit they have faced with NTP. After multiple court rulings that went against RIM, they are now engaged once again in settlement talks with NTP. If RIM fails to reach an agreement with NTP, their service could be forced to shut down operations in the US.
Earlier this week, NTP co-founder Donald Stout told the press that RIM could reach a settlement with NTP if it makes one large payment of 5.7% of RIM's projected U.S. sales through 2012. This would likely be hundreds of millions of dollars or even over 1 billion dollars. Stay tuned.
