BlackBerry users upset at outage - RIM has no answers

Yesterday's BlackBerry outage is still unexplained. RIM says they have a team looking at the situation but they do not know the root cause of the 3 hour outage.

RIM has had a small number of outages in its 9 year history, but frankly they need to do something to solve this problem from ever happening again. We were willing to accept one outage, but after promising that they took steps so that it would never happen again, their promises came up lame.

Like we reported yesterday, RIM outages are the sole reason that we do not rely on a BlackBerry. With a Treo you have options that can get you out of a jam if one of your email providers go down. You can use a different provider to access email via POP or IMAP. It's a different story when you rely on RIM's service. Interestingly, other users feel the same way. Here is a clip from a CNN report:

"I'm mad -- it's enough already," said a frustrated Stuart Gold, who said he gets 1,000 e-mails a day as director of field marketing for Web analytics company Omniture Inc.

Gold, who worked most of Monday on a laptop while traveling, plans to ask his company to buy him a backup smart phone from a rival like Palm Inc., which makes the Treo, in case BlackBerry service goes on the blink again.

"I don't know what happened, I don't care what happened. They need to save their excuses for someone who cares," Gold said.

Enough said. I hope the folks at RIM are listening closely. They risk tarnishing their brand as unreliable.
