According to The NPD Group, a consumer market research company, Android phones have taken the lead in terms of sales for Q2. Previously, RIM's BlackBerry was the leading smartphone but Android has taken over. The report comes with a bit of a disclaimer though:

I have a feeling that with corporate purchases RIM is probably still in the lead. This is still a strong move up for Google and a substantial move down for RIM.
The top 5 Android phones sold in Q2:
Motorola Droid
HTC Droid Incredible
HTC EVO 4G
HTC Hero
HTC Droid Eris
Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD said, "Blackberry 6 will soon offer features that have been popular in recently launched Android handsets, such as support for capacitive touchscreens and a WebKit-based browser. However, the Blackberry Torch lacks the large screen allure that has characterized the best selling Android devices at its price point, including the Droid Incredible and EVO 4G."
Can RIM retake the lead from Google? Probably not, but stay tuned.
