The Indonesian Telecommunication Regulation Body (BRTI) has threatened to shut down BlackBerry Messenger service on all BlackBerry devices in country because RIM opted to put a server in Singapore rather than in Indonesia.
RIM promised to build a data center in the area, but did not specify where it would be built. They apparently chose to build it in Singapore which upset the Indonesian officials. RIM should just hang tough. If the Indonesian government shuts them down they'll only be shooting themselves in the foot. BlackBerry is very popular in Indonesia and a lot of people would be hurt if the service was shut down.
“Because RIM has not been cooperative, it is possible that we will soon end BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) and BBM service. BlackBerry therefore, would just be like other cellular phones,” BRTI member Heru Sutadi told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
