RIM executive ordered to remain in Indonesia while being investigated

News - By: SPBlast! Staff - December 06, 2011

RIM's highest ranking executive in Indonesia is being investigated, and has been ordered to remain in the country, after a recent stampede occurred at a promotional BlackBerry event. RIM offered half-priced BlackBerry Bolds to the first 1000 customers who showed up at the event, but they were unprepared for the massive crowed that came by. A stampede occurred and several people were injured.

Police named four suspects, who could be charged with negligence leading to injury: RIM country head Andrew Cobham, who was present at the event, the managers of the security and events companies that planned it—Hill & Associates and Experiential, respectively—and a manager of the mall where the outlet is located.

"They're not being detained as they're being cooperative," by making regular visits to the police station, said South Jakarta Police Chief Imam Sugianto. "Our team will continue to investigate for new evidence." The charge carries a maximum sentence of five years, he said.

RIM, of Waterloo, Ontario, said it was continuing to help with the police investigation as well as conducting its own.
