Apple announced a new iMessage app at the WWDC 11 yesterday that seems to take direct aim at RIM's BlackBerry Messenger. One of the most popular apps for the BlackBerry platform besides email is BBM, and many users stick with the BlackBerry because of BBM. With the launch of iMessage, Apple is adding even more enterprise functionality to the iPhone and will likely pull BlackBerry users over to the iPhone.
Recent news suggests that Apple has now taken over BlackBerry's position in the US market share race. More and more companies are switching over to the iPhone from the BlackBerry and yesterday's announcement of iMessage provides yet another way that the iPhone can match the BlackBerry's features.
Is iMessage a big deal? Not yet, but it will be. RIM needs to do a much better job in providing consumer-friendly features to their phones instead of focusing only on enterprise. The BlackBerry PlayBook's OS is interesting. Perhaps porting that so all BB's can run it is a start. Otherwise, RIM faces a steady decline just like Palm.
