UK Government considers Twitter, Facebook, BlackBerry ban in wake of riots

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - August 12, 2011

In the wake of the recent riots in London, British Prime Minister David Cameron is considering drastic measures to keep this from happening again. Police believe that social media sites like Twitter and Facebook were used to start the riots, and BlackBerry Messenger was also mentioned as a possible organizing tool. Cameron told Parliament they are looking into, "whether it would be right to stop people communicating via these websites and services when we know they are plotting violence, disorder and criminality."

Could the British Government really shut down access to Twitter, Facebook, or BBM? It's highly doubtful. They could try, but there would be a huge outcry. The more realistic answer would be to track the specific suspects and perhaps shut down their accounts, although that would likely cause a problem too.
