First QNX BlackBerry launching in 2012?

News - By: pdaBlast! Staff - August 08, 2011

RIM is set to finally launch the first QNX-powered BlackBerry in the first quarter of 2012, if the rumors are true. BGR is reporting that the first QNX-powered BlackBerry is codenamed "Colt" and will be out in Q1 next year. The company recently announced a line of BlackBerry 7 devices, but it failed to generate the excitement required to keep RIM relevant in the race with Apple and Google.

BGR reports that in order to launch new QNX-based phones RIM will need to re-write the BES code which has proven difficult to date. RIM is also battling poor battery time with dual-core processors so it's possible that the first QNX phone will feature a single core.

Regardless of specific hardware, I'm glad to see RIM finally moving ahead with a new OS. Will it be enough to keep them in the game? That remains to be seen, but they have been quickly sliding out of the game with their current line up of devices.
