Well it's official. BlackBerry is no longer the top smartphone in its home market of Canada. The iPhone finally beat the Blackberry. RIM shipped 2.08 million BlackBerrys last year in Canada, but Apple shipped 2.85 million units. The data was compiled by IDC and Bloomberg. Until now RIM has dominated Apple in Canada and why wouldn't they? Canada is their home market.
I'm sure RIM will find a way to spin this news, but unfortunately it's not good news. The pressure seems to be mounting against RIM. Please RIM, pull a rabbit out of your hat.
“For RIM, in its home market, to lose that No. 1 position to iPhone is strategically important,” said Taylor, who manages about $15 billion in assets, including RIM and Apple shares. “It does identify, even with a home-country bias, how consumers are responding to the greater functionality of the iPhone.”
