BlackBerry and Secusmart have teamed up to secure BlackBerry 10 devices in a way not seen before. BlackBerry has a feature called "Balance" that allows users to have separate personal and work related areas on the phone. The two areas are partitioned, and using Secusmart's chip, the work area will be encrypted, and can only be accessed if the user knows the PIN. If you do not enter the correct PIN the phone will lock you out or work mode.
The two companies claim that you can have classified information on your phone, but still safely use it for personal matters.
The two companies demonstrated the technology CeBit and claim that they German Government was impressed enough to place an order for BlackBerry 10 devices outfitted with Secusmart's card.
"You can have classified information on your phone, but you can use it for your regular phone," said Sinisha Patkovic, vice president of BlackBerry's security advisory service.
Secusmart does have chips that work with other platforms, but BlackBerry says they are not as secure as BB10.
"Android doesn't have platform security down to the chipset," Erdmann said, and BlackBerry does. "In Android, you're not able to ensure the operating system has not been manipulated."
The iPhone does not have a microSD card slot so the technology isn't available.
