Ugh. More bad news for BlackBerry it seems. An unnamed source has told The Wall Street Journal that BlackBerry will layoff about 40% of its workforce by the end of the year. The layoffs will span all departments and will come in waves. Despite news today that BlackBerry will release a Z30, 5-inch phablet, the company appears to be in real trouble. Massive layoffs like this are never a good sign without new management, or an overall new strategy. BlackBerry has neither. They are simply trying to stop the bleeding and things don't look good.
Previous rumors have suggested BlackBerry would sell itself to the highest bidder by November, but interested buyers seem to be waiting to see if they can get BlackBerry on the cheap. If the stock continues to fall, a potential buyer would be able to save millions in the acquisition.
This has been a long, painful road for BlackBerry. They still make good products and could potentially be a niche player, but it's getting increasingly hard to find a bright spot in any BlackBerry news.
