BlackBerry announced it intends to sell to a group of investors led by Fairfax Financial, and the company will go private. In light of the sale, BlackBerry says it will not hold an earnings call with the latest quarterly report. BlackBerry's Fairfax Financial deal is worth $4.7 billion or $9 per share, but BlackBerry shares have dropped to $8 in spite of the news. Right now, BlackBerry is toxic in terms of investors.
It's been a long, slow, decline for the once dominant smartphone maker. BlackBerry simply could not adapt quick enough to the new smartphone world created by Apple and Google. BlackBerry will now take the company private, and focus solely on enterprise customers. T-Mobile has announced it will no longer offer BlackBerry 10 devices. Another blow to BlackBerry.
At the same time, BlackBerry is releasing BBM for Android and iOS. Will that business be worth something? Can it grow? Who would need BBM on iOS when they have other options like iMessage or Whatsapp?
