BlackBerry decided to monetize BBM for iOS and Android by selling stickers to its customers. The BBM app is free, but BlackBerry is up selling customers with fancy stickers. Many questioned the move when it was announced about a week ago, but the results are in, and they're doing surprisingly well.
BBM stickers are essentially fancy emoji icons to be used in BBM. A pack of 25 stickers cost $2 and it looks like that pricing structure is working. According to Forbes, BBM Stickers has rocketed up the App Store's charts in South Africa and Asia. BBM is #3 on iPhone Social Networking app chart measured by revenue generation for South Africa and South-East Asia. Asian sticker giants LINE and WeChat are at #22 and #37. That's impressive.
Will sales hold up for BlackBerry or is this simply early curiosity? Nobody knows at this point, but it's a nice launch for BBM. BlackBerry can use all the revenue they can get!
