BlackBerry has been in cost-cutting mode for awhile now, and they company has done another round of layoffs. BlackBerry laid off 65 people in its developer relations group last week. That brings the total number of layoffs in Waterloo to 1205 since last September.
BlackBerry said in a statement:
"We recognize our local employees' hard work on behalf of our company, and the difficulty of this news. And we will do everything in our power to treat our employees with compassion while offering support during this time of transition."
The layoffs came just after the announcement that BlackBerry users would have access to the Amazon Appstore. By giving users access to Amazon's store, BlackBerry will not have to spend as much time focusing on consumer apps. The company can now focus more clearly on enterprise apps. BlackBerry is definitely moving back to the core focus on enterprise that gave the company early success.
