BlackBerry said its Android and iOS device-management service has been awarded security clearance from the U.S. Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). That means that government agencies can now use the BlackBerry Enterprise Service for secure communications.
BlackBerry expanded BES to rival devices running Android and iOS a year ago. The new clearance gives BlackBerry a boost in getting back into the space that made the brand iconic, even if those agencies don't use BlackBerry devices. Government agencies have recently begun testing iOS devices and BlackBerry was desperate to keep their core businesses.
"The STIG approval for Secure Work Space for iOS and Android is another validation that enterprises and government agencies can rely on BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 for secure mobility - no matter which devices they have in the field," John Sims, the head of BlackBerry's enterprise arm, said in a statement.
